Trump on deal to lift government shutdown: ‘I am pleased that Democrats have come to their senses’ [usatoday.com]
WASHINGTON – President Trump declared victory Monday as the Senate reached a compromise to end the government shutdown now on its third day, though Democrats said the fight over immigration is far from over.
“I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses,” Trump said in a statement read by his press secretary, Sarah Sanders.
“Once the government is funded, my administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration. We will make a long term deal on immigration if and only if it’s good for our country.”
On Monday, Senate Democrats joined in approving a Republican leadership plan to provide funding for government agencies through Feb. 8 — with a promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to work toward a bipartisan compromise on immigration, border security, and a broader budget outline before that new deadline.
